PFLAG is the nation’s largest organization uniting families, allies and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. The organization is committed to advancing equality through its mission of support, education and advocacy, and has more than 400 chapters and 200,000 supporters crossing multiple generations of American families in major urban centers, small cities and rural areas in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
We reached out to PFLAG to find out what LGBTQ film and television they recommend to their friends and families, and the list we got back runs the full gamut of diversity and inclusion … from family, to gender, to race, to superpowers!
“PFLAG National is thrilled to participate in XFINITY LGBTQ’s Community Recommendations collections. It’s a wonderful opportunity to elevate titles that we believe speak to our vision of a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. As the unified voice of families, allies and LGBTQ people we want to be sure that families—and diverse families and cultures—were included in the mix.”
Check out PFLAG’s Community Recommendations in the XFINITY LGBTQ Film & TV Collection. And on June 28, be sure to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the event that led to the founding of PFLAG: founder Jeanne Manford’s march in support of her gay son. Now more than ever, we need bold families and allies to take steps in support of their own LGBTQ loved ones. Learn more about the history of PFLAG and #TakeOneStep for equality for those you love.
PFLAG says: “This is true PFLAG story about one mother’s struggle to reconcile her faith with her love for her son after a devastating act of self-harm. People from around the world have watched this film and been inspired to contact us for support to come out to their own families.”
PFLAG says: “The issues of faith and LGBTQ equality and affirmation continue to make headlines, socially and politically. This movie gives wonderful insight into the way five different families have personally tackled the complex issues.”
“Carol“
PFLAG says: “Watch a beautiful romantic drama with moving performances, beautiful cinematography and a true glimpse into the challenges faced by lesbians and bisexual women in previous decades.”
PFLAG says: “A critically acclaimed and award-winning documentary, ‘Paris Is Burning’ is known and loved for its exploration of race, gender, class and sexuality through a look at New York City drag ball culture.”
PFLAG says: “A favorite, ‘The Kids Are All Right’ explores the different ways families are made. We were proud to celebrate writer/director Lisa Cholodenko at our L.A. event when the film was released.”
PFLAG says: “Now in its fourth season, this engaging series has captured hearts—including ours—with its exploration of LGBTQ families, and has a richness of diversity (gender, race, age) rarely seen on television.”
PFLAG says: “These two titles from the DC universe are as diverse and inclusive as it gets. From ‘Supergirl’s’ newly out sister, to ‘Gotham’s’ bisexual main character and a great gay twist on a perennial Batman favorite, both titles have so far managed to avoid the #BuryYourGays trope and keep the storylines fresh and real.”
PFLAG says: “Now in its second season, a fantastic exploration of what it means to be LGBTQ in different parts of the world. The relationship between the hosts, best friends Ellen Page and Ian Daniel, adds to the awesome. The episodes run from fun, to educational, to flat-out serious investigative journalism (and in the case of the recent episodes on current events and Orlando, profoundly moving).”
